Modern History of Republic of China (Taiwan)

This course will explore the special events that happened in China from the mid Ching Dynasty to the end of last century. In addition to illustrating the causes and results of such events, we will compare them with international situation during the same period, in order to manifest the true historic meaning of the events. This course, also will present separately the outline of Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period and the dominion of KMT, explaining the politics, economics and social development during the past 100 year on the Island.

Relations between Taiwan Neighboring Countries

The course aims to explore the interaction between Taiwan and the major Asian countries. The course is designed by an introduction of East Asian countries’ development and current challenges, followed by presenting multiple dimensions of interactions between Taiwan and Asia: political and economic relations, brain drain and Asian immigrants, corporate organization, identity conflict among Chinese societies, East Asia food security regime, Taiwan’s participation and initiatives in the APEC, etc. The course aims to provide students an overview of Taiwan’s relation with Asia.

From historical and geographic point of view, this course provides a thorough overview of Asian culture: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Philippine, Malaysian and Indonesian culture. It also studies the different cultures in Asia through its arts, literature, thoughts, religions and society
systems. The “Silk Road” and the “The voyages of Zheng He”, great events for the culture exchange, are included. |

Apart from the midterm and final exam, the class in its general structure is divided into 16 units.

The democratization and economic development of the independent southeast Asian countries has been an important topic after the II World War. In front of the resistance of the authoritarian regimes, they are heading forward. In this course we are going to understand the process of their democratization and their governments.

Regional Disputes in Southeast Asia and South Asia

This course explore the overview of Southeast Asian national associations and to understand the impact of the South China Sea regional dispute on the security of Southeast Asia. Including the disputes over island reefs and the development process, as well as the position of the ASEAN and neighboring countries on the dispute over the South China Sea, and Taiwan's policies and propositions on the South China Sea dispute.
The second part focuses on the development of regional conflicts in South Asian countries and the impact of these conflicts on the security of the region.

Besides, we want to understand the background, strategy,and performance of ROC foreign policy. From ¨One China only¨, ¨substantive diplomacy¨, pragmatic diplomacy¨, to the present ¨diplomacy for survival, hoping to give the students a panorama view of the past, present and future of ROC´s foreign policy. |
