systems. The “Silk Road” and the “The voyages of Zheng He”, great events for the culture exchange, are included. |

The principal goal of this course is to allow students to expeditiously learn many of the salient facts and features comprising the Taiwan experience. The people of Taiwan have witnessed very distinctive historical periods that taken together have forged the island a unique culture. This course explores Taiwan from an historical point of view, covering such topics as Taiwan before the 17th century, Taiwan under Dutch occupation, Taiwan under Koxinga´s reign, Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty, Taiwan as a Japanese colony, and Taiwan in the modern age. The course also touches on Taiwan's natural geography, its aboriginal culture, the difficult periods of exploitation, folk beliefs, cultural convictions, local cuisine, art activities, and economic development

This is an introduction of the history of the most important Asian country: China in modern time, beginning with the Opium War until the present situation of China. Not only the most important incidents will be studies, but also the transformation of China in politics, economy and cultural aspect during more than one hundred years will be under our observation.

The security in the Asian regions surrounding Taiwan is of paramount importance for Taiwan and the World. Tensions in the South and East China Sea are a menace to the World economic security and involve Taiwan’s future. In this subject we study the security of the regions of South and East Asia from the perspective of Taiwan and the World, focusing not only on the military dimension of security but also on its economic and social dimensions.

From ¨One China only¨, ¨substantive diplomacy¨, pragmatic diplomacy¨, to the present ¨diplomacy for survival, hoping to give the students a panorama view of the past, present and future of ROC´s foreign policy. |
Cross-strait Relations

A Strait is the symbol of protection and also means the barrier; a Strait connects the both sides of the land, has the function of the bridge. This course will discuss the relations between the both sides of Taiwan Strait from the historical point of view. |
ASEAN and the South China Sea Diputes |

The major focus of this course is on the background of establishment of the ASEAN, its development and problems it encountered. Next is to explore the geo-political environment of the islands in the South China Sea, the process of disputes and the ASEAN’s policy towards the South China Sea. Finally, it shall discuss the policy of Taiwan towards the South China Sea. |
